Land Rover Defender 110 Interior: Seating Options and Configurations
The Land Rover Defender 110 interior offers a blend of rugged functionality and modern comfort, making it a standout choice for adventure enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike. This iconic vehicle has undergone significant updates, providing a spacious and versatile cabin that caters to various needs. From its seating configurations to its cargo space, the Defender 110 has been designed to accommodate both passengers and gear with ease. Source
Inside the Land Rover Defender 110, drivers and passengers will find a range of seating options and configurations to suit different requirements. This article delves into the various aspects of the Defender 110’s interior, including its seating capacity, front row amenities, second and third-row arrangements, and cargo space dimensions. It also explores how these features contribute to the vehicle’s overall versatility and appeal for those seeking a capable and comfortable SUV for their journeys.
Seating Capacity and Configurations
The Land Rover Defender 110 offers a versatile interior that caters to various needs, with multiple seating configurations available. This flexibility allows the vehicle to accommodate different passenger requirements and cargo needs, making it suitable for a wide range of uses.Standard Five-Seat Layout
The standard configuration of the Defender 110 comes with a five-seat layout. This arrangement provides ample space for passengers, with a particularly roomy second row. The cabin’s width contributes to a comfortable experience, offering generous legroom for rear passengers. The second-row bench is notably wide, which enhances comfort for multiple occupants. This bench moves in a 60/40 split, allowing for adjustments to balance passenger space and cargo capacity as needed.Optional Six-Seat Configuration
For those seeking a unique seating arrangement, the Defender 110 has an optional six-seat configuration. This setup includes a folding jump-seat in the center of the front row, adding an extra seating position without compromising the vehicle’s versatility. This configuration can be particularly useful for families or work crews who occasionally need to transport an additional passenger in the front.Seven-Seat Option for Families
Families or groups requiring more seating capacity can opt for the seven-seat configuration in the Defender 110. This “five plus two” layout includes two additional seats that can be pulled up from the boot floor when needed. These third-row seats are designed for occasional use and are best suited for children, teenagers, or adults on shorter journeys. When using the third row, passengers can adjust the second-row seats to distribute space more evenly. The second row can slide forward, creating a balance between middle and rear passenger legroom. However, it’s worth noting that the third row in the Defender 110 is somewhat compact, with limited foot room and a seat bottom cushion positioned close to the floor. For those who prioritize cargo space, the third-row seats can be easily folded down when not in use. This feature allows for a significantly larger cargo area, making the Defender 110 highly versatile for both passenger transport and cargo hauling. It’s important to note that while the seven-seat option provides additional flexibility, the cargo space behind the third row is limited. When all seats are in use, the cargo area becomes quite narrow, suitable for items like strollers or computer bags but not ideal for larger luggage. For families or groups requiring more substantial third-row space and overall interior room, the Defender 130 model might be a better choice. It shares the same wheelbase as the 110 but has an extended body, providing more generous accommodations in the third row and increased overall interior space. The Defender 110’s seating configurations demonstrate Land Rover’s commitment to versatility and practicality. Whether used as a five-seater for everyday driving, a six-seater for unique transport needs, or a seven-seater for family outings, the Defender 110 adapts to various lifestyles and requirements. This flexibility, combined with the vehicle’s rugged capability and modern comfort features, makes the Defender 110 a compelling choice for those seeking a multi-purpose SUV that can handle both urban environments and off-road adventures with ease.Front Row Seating
Driver and Passenger Comfort
The Land Rover Defender 110 offers a front row seating experience that combines comfort with functionality. The driver and passenger seats are designed to provide optimal support during both on-road and off-road adventures. These seats come with a range of features that enhance the overall driving experience. One of the standout features is the availability of memory seats. This allows different drivers to save their preferred seating positions, making it convenient for multiple users to quickly adjust the seat to their liking. The seats also offer heating functionality, which is particularly useful during colder weather conditions. The driving position has been carefully designed to offer excellent visibility. Drivers can easily see the hood out ahead, which is crucial for precise maneuvering, especially in off-road situations. This clear view contributes to a sense of control and confidence behind the wheel. In terms of technology integration, the front row is equipped with a digital instrument cluster. This provides the driver with essential information in a clear, easily readable format. The vehicle also features automatic lights and wipers, adding to the convenience factor for the front row occupants.Center Jump Seat Feature
One of the most distinctive features of the Land Rover Defender 110’s front row is the optional center jump seat. This innovative addition transforms the vehicle into a six-seater, with three seats in the front row. The jump seat is positioned between the driver and passenger seats, offering a unique seating arrangement that sets the Defender 110 apart from many of its competitors. While the center seat is not as spacious as the main seats, it provides valuable additional seating capacity. This feature has made the Defender 110 particularly desirable for families or groups who occasionally need to transport an extra passenger in the front. When not in use as a seat, the jump seat can be folded down to serve as a functional center console. In this configuration, it reveals cup holders and charging points, enhancing the practicality of the front row space. This versatility allows users to easily switch between maximizing seating capacity and optimizing storage and convenience features.Material Options
The Land Rover Defender 110 offers a variety of material options for its front row seats, catering to different preferences and needs. These options range from durable cloth to premium leather upholstery. For those seeking a more luxurious feel, leather seats are available in various colors and finishes. Options include black fluted leather, barley fluted leather, and chocolate fluted leather. These leather seats not only provide a premium look but also offer durability and ease of maintenance. For a sportier esthetic and enhanced support, Recaro seats are available as an option. These seats come in various leather finishes, including barley fluted leather and chocolate fluted leather. The Recaro seats are known for their excellent support and comfort, making them a popular choice for those who prioritize driving dynamics. For users who prefer a more traditional or classic look, there are options that fit well with vintage-style Land Rover interiors. These include deluxe leather seats in various colors, designed to complement the rugged yet refined character of the Defender 110. The choice of materials extends beyond just the seats. Some packages offer coordinated interiors with matching leather on the dashboard, door cards, and other interior elements, creating a cohesive and premium feel throughout the cabin.Second Row Seating
The second row seating in the Land Rover Defender 110 offers a blend of versatility and comfort, designed to accommodate various passenger needs and cargo requirements. This section of the vehicle has been thoughtfully engineered to provide ample space and functionality for occupants.Spaciousness and Legroom
The Defender 110’s second row has made significant strides in terms of passenger comfort. The cabin’s width contributes to a roomy experience, with a notably wide bench that enhances comfort for multiple occupants. This spaciousness allows for easy installation of child seats and provides sufficient room for adults to sit comfortably. However, it’s worth noting that the legroom in the second row can vary depending on the specific model. In the double cab pickup (DCPU) version of the Defender 110, for instance, legroom has been observed to be more limited compared to the station wagon (SW) models. This difference is due to the rear panel of the cab in DCPU models, which prevents the seats from being positioned as far back as in SW versions. As a result, the seat backs in DCPU models tend to be more upright, potentially impacting passenger comfort on longer journeys. For families with young children, the second row’s design has some notable advantages. The height of the seats makes it easier to place and remove baby seats without straining one’s back, a feature that sets the Defender apart from traditional cars. This ergonomic benefit can be particularly appreciated during frequent use or on longer trips.Folding Mechanisms
The second row seats in the Defender 110 come with folding capabilities that enhance the vehicle’s versatility. The bench moves in a 60/40 split, allowing users to adjust the balance between passenger space and cargo capacity as needed. This feature has made the Defender 110 particularly desirable for families or groups who require flexibility in their seating arrangements. Some models have seats that can fold forward, providing access to the space underneath. However, it’s important to note that in certain configurations, these seats may be bolted in place at the rear with a bracket. This setup can limit the ability to easily access the under-seat storage area, which some owners have expressed interest in utilizing for storing tools or recovery gear. For those looking to maximize legroom or recline options, some users have found that unbolting the rear backs from their brackets allows the backs to fold flat. While this modification might allow for some additional reclining, it’s crucial to ensure that any adjustments made do not compromise the safety features of the seats.Child Seat Compatibility
The Land Rover Defender 110 has been designed with family use in mind, and this is evident in its child seat compatibility features. The second row is equipped with two sets of ISOFIX points and three top tether anchorages, making it possible to securely install multiple child seats. One of the standout features is the ability to fit three child seats comfortably across the second row. This configuration can accommodate various types of child seats, from infant carriers to booster seats, making the Defender 110 a practical choice for growing families. For infants, the Defender 110 can accommodate rear-facing baby seats from birth until the child outgrows the specified height and weight limits. As children grow, the vehicle can adapt to their changing needs with forward-facing child seats and eventually booster seats for older children. The spaciousness of the second row also allows for comfortable feeding arrangements. Some users have reported being able to feed infants in the back, even with two child seats installed, by utilizing the central seat between them. It’s important to note that while the second row offers excellent child seat compatibility, installing a child seat in the seat that tilts forward for third-row access will prevent passengers from stepping through to the third row. This is a consideration for families who frequently use all three rows of seating.Third Row Seating (Optional)
The Land Rover Defender 110 offers an optional third row, providing seating for two additional passengers. This feature adds versatility to the vehicle, allowing it to accommodate up to seven occupants. However, the third row comes with certain limitations and considerations that potential buyers should keep in mind.Access and Comfort
Accessing the third row in the Defender 110 has its challenges. When the air suspension is lowered, entry becomes easier. However, the presence of a car seat in the second row can significantly hinder access. The second row’s forward-tilting mechanism, designed to facilitate third-row entry, becomes unusable when a car seat is installed. This limitation can make it difficult for passengers to reach the rearmost seats. Once seated, passengers will find the third row to be a tight fit. While headroom is surprisingly generous, even for individuals up to 6 feet tall, legroom is at a premium. The seat bottom cushion sits close to the floor, resulting in a somewhat awkward seating position with knees raised high. Adults may find it tolerable for short trips, but it’s more suitable for children or smaller passengers. The design of the third-row seats includes an unusual feature where the headrests fold into a pocket area of the seat back. This design choice contributes to the compact nature of the seating arrangement but may not be ideal for taller occupants.Folding Mechanisms
The third row in the Defender 110 employs a manual folding mechanism. To access these seats, users need to pull out a mat in the cargo area, revealing the folded seats underneath. The process involves manually reclining the seats and lifting the headrests into position. When not in use, the third row folds flat, maximizing cargo space. However, it’s worth noting that the folding mechanism in the three-row Defender differs from the two-row model. In the two-row version, the second-row seats flip out the bottom cushion, allowing the backrest to fold completely flat. In contrast, the three-row model’s second row, when folded, leaves an incline in the load floor, which may affect cargo storage.Best Use Scenarios
The optional third row in the Defender 110 is best suited for occasional use rather than daily transportation. It’s ideal for families with older children who no longer require car seats, as these can impede access to the third row. For those with younger children needing car seats, the practicality of the third row diminishes significantly. When the third row is in use, cargo space becomes extremely limited. The area behind the third row is narrow, suitable only for small items like a pencil stroller or computer bags. This limitation makes it impractical for longer trips or situations requiring substantial luggage space. For those who prioritize cargo capacity, keeping the third row folded most of the time is advisable. In this configuration, the Defender 110 offers a generous and versatile cargo area, thanks to its tall cabin and squared-off shape. The vehicle can accommodate up to six 24-inch roller bags with the third row folded, showcasing its practical storage capabilities. It’s important to note that while the third row adds seating capacity, it doesn’t transform the Defender 110 into a full-fledged family hauler. Land Rover reports that approximately one in three new Defenders are sold with the optional third row, indicating its popularity despite its limitations. For those seeking more spacious third-row accommodations, the Defender 130 model offers additional room, particularly in terms of foot space and overall comfort.Cargo Space and Versatility
The Land Rover Defender 110 offers impressive cargo space and versatility, making it a practical choice for various needs. Its boxy design and thoughtful features contribute to its functionality as a capable hauler.Cargo Capacity with Different Seat Configurations
The Defender 110’s cargo capacity varies significantly depending on the seating configuration. With all seats in use, the space behind the third row is limited but can still accommodate small items like a pencil stroller or computer bags. However, when the third row is folded, the vehicle’s cargo capacity increases substantially. In the five-seat configuration, the Defender 110 provides 786 liters of space up to the parcel shelf. This expands to an impressive 1,875 liters when the second-row seats are folded down. The absence of a step in the floor, unlike some competitors, enhances the usability of this space. For those with the seven-seat option, the second row can slide forward and backward, allowing users to prioritize either storage or legroom. This feature adds about 150mm (6 inches) to the boot space when the seats are fully forward. However, it’s worth noting that in the seven-seat model, the second-row seats don’t fold completely flat, creating a slight incline in the load bay when folded down.Loading Features
The Defender 110 has several features that enhance its loading capabilities. The rear doors open in a 25:75 split, with the smaller side designed to open without interfering with the spare tire. While this design requires opening both doors for larger items, it offers flexibility for quick access. The vehicle has made provisions for securing cargo. Floor rails and lashing eyes allow users to strap items securely in the uncarpeted boot. This feature has made the Defender particularly useful for transporting a variety of gear. For added convenience, the Defender 110 offers an optional loadspace synthetic rubber mat. This waterproof, non-slip mat has made cleaning the cargo area easier and provides protection against muddy or wet items. It also includes a bumper protector to prevent scuffs and scratches during loading and unloading. The Defender 110 also offers a loadspace full protection liner, designed to cover the floor, sides, headliner, and inside of the rear door. This liner has made the vehicle more versatile for transporting large or dirty items without concern for damaging the interior.Comparison with Competitors
When compared to some of its competitors, the Defender 110 holds its own in terms of cargo space and versatility. While it may not offer the largest cargo capacity in its class, its thoughtful design features and flexible seating arrangements have made it a strong contender. The Defender’s boxy shape has made it particularly suitable for pet owners, as the squared-off rear area creates a natural containment space. This design has made it easier to transport pets without them trying to hop over into the passenger area. One unique feature of the Defender 110 has made it stand out from some competitors. With the optional air suspension, users can lower or raise the vehicle’s rear using buttons located in the cargo area. This feature has made loading heavy items easier and has enhanced the vehicle’s versatility in various situations. In summary, the Land Rover Defender 110’s cargo space and versatility features have made it a practical choice for those needing a capable and flexible vehicle for both everyday use and adventurous outings. Conclusion
The Land Rover Defender 110’s interior design showcases a blend of practicality and versatility, catering to various needs and preferences. Its range of seating configurations, from the standard five-seat layout to the optional seven-seat arrangement, gives it an edge in accommodating different passenger requirements. The front row’s comfort features, combined with the spacious second row and the optional third row, make it a strong contender in the SUV market. Beyond its seating options, the Defender 110 shines in its cargo capacity and adaptability. The vehicle’s boxy design and thoughtful loading features have made it a go-to choice for those needing a capable hauler. Whether it’s for daily use or adventurous outings, the Defender 110’s interior has proven its worth in balancing passenger comfort with practical storage solutions. I don't normally leave reviews but I can't recommend these guys enough, seriously - anyone that's looking to buy a van or other commercial vehicle, give these guy's a call, ask for Tom because you won't be disappointed...!!!
I needed a commercial vehicle for private use as I'm not self employed and therefore paying the VAT upfront is quite a chunk of money to loose so needed it to be wrapped up in the monthly repayment. I'd already tried several other companies before Swiss Vans and non of them were interested. I'd pretty much given up and was looking at 2nd Hand vans until I came across Swiss Vans advert on Facebook. I sent a message (with very low expectation) and the next day I was contacted by Tom Jones (yes, a Welshman called Tom Jones who sells vans...!!!). Tom is the first person that actually took the time to listen to what I needed and how I needed it work. He went away and came back a couple of hours later and explained that initially this wasn't going to be easy to achieve but to leave it with him and that he'd call me the next day. To be honest, I didn't think I'd hear from him again but true to his word he called me the next day and said that he had it all worked out, all agreed and all in place ready to go. Tom fired over the paperwork, I paid the small holding deposit and a few weeks later the vans been delivered and completely exceeded my expectations.
I'm a great believer that 'People buy People', yes Swiss Vans are truly excellent and I'd go as far as to say that in my experience, they're better than the rest but like all other companies they're only as good as the people they have working for them. Tom - I can't thank you enough, you're a credit to Swiss Vans, and Swiss Vans - you're outstanding.
