This versatile camper van, part of Volkswagen’s iconic California range, offers a perfect blend of comfort and practicality for those seeking to explore the great outdoors. With its clever design and innovative features, the VW California Beach has become a popular choice for both weekend getaways and extended road trips.
From the compact VW T6.1 California Beach to the spacious VW California 6.1, this line of camper vans caters to various needs and preferences. The article will delve into the different models available, including the VW T6.1 California Beach 4Motion for those requiring extra traction. It will also explore the VW California Beach interior, sleeping arrangements, and outdoor living capabilities. Additionally, the piece will examine the driving experience, performance, and key considerations such as VW California Beach dimensions, price, and how it compares to other models like the VW California Beach vs Ocean.VW California Beach Models
The VW California Beach line offers two distinct models: the Beach Camper and the Beach Tour. Both versions provide versatile options for camping enthusiasts and travellers alike, with unique features tailored to different needs.Beach Camper
The California 6.1 Beach Camper is designed for those who prioritise camping functionality. It comes standard with four seats, with the option to increase to five. This model boasts an exclusive fold-out mini-kitchen, complete with a single-ring gas hob, allowing occupants to prepare simple meals on the go. The Beach Camper also features a manual pop-up hydraulic roof, a pull-out awning, and a single sliding door on the right-hand side. Importantly, it is registered as a motorhome, which may have implications for taxation and usage.Beach Tour
The California 6.1 Beach Tour, on the other hand, is geared towards those who require more passenger capacity. It starts with five seats as standard but offers the flexibility to increase to six or seven. Unlike the Camper, the Tour model has sliding doors on both the passenger and driver’s side, enhancing accessibility. It is registered as a passenger vehicle, making it more suitable for daily use as a family car. While it lacks the mini-kitchen of the Camper model, it still retains the manual pop-up hydraulic roof for camping versatility.Key Features
Both models share several key features that make the California Beach line stand out:- Manual pop-up hydraulic roof: This feature provides extra headroom and sleeping space when parked.
- Versatile seating arrangements: The ability to add or remove seats allows for customisation based on travel needs.
- Compact size: Despite its camping capabilities, the California 6.1 Beach handles like a passenger car, making it easy to navigate through narrow streets and fit into most car parks.
- Raised bed area: An extra-large sleeping area with a folding extension ensures comfort during overnight stays.
- Outdoor living: Both models come with camping tables and chairs that can be easily stowed away when not in use.

Interior and Sleeping Arrangements
The VW California Beach offers a versatile interior that can be easily transformed from a comfortable living space to a cosy sleeping area. Its clever design maximises the use of space, providing various seating and sleeping configurations to suit different needs.Seating Options
The California Beach comes with two main seating configurations. The standard version features a two-seat bench in the rear, which can accommodate two passengers comfortably. For families or groups requiring more seating capacity, there’s an option for a three-seat bench. Both versions include integrated seat belts for safety. The rear bench can be adjusted to various positions. It slides forwards and backwards on rails, allowing for customisation of the interior space. The backrest also has multiple positions, from an upright driving position to a more relaxed angle for comfort during stops. For those needing occasional extra seating, a fifth seat can be added. However, it’s important to note that this additional seat must be removed when converting the interior to sleeping mode.Bed Configurations
The California Beach’s ability to transform into a comfortable sleeping area is one of its standout features. The process of converting the seating area into a bed is straightforward and can be completed in minutes. To set up the bed:- Slide the rear bench backwards
- Fold down the rear seats
- Push up the multiflex board, which becomes the rear section of the bed
- Fold down the three-seat bench
Storage Solutions
Despite its compact size, the California Beach offers numerous storage options. These include:- Door bins in both front doors
- Two glove boxes on the comfort dash
- Storage cubbies along the top of the passenger side
- Drawers underneath the rear bench seat
- Storage pockets on the back of the front seats
- A hidden storage compartment in the rear for essentials like the jack assembly and first aid kit
Comfort Features
The California Beach includes several features to enhance comfort during camping trips:- A fold-out mini-kitchen with a single-ring gas hob (in the Beach Camper model)
- A manual pop-up hydraulic roof for extra headroom
- Camping tables and chairs that can be easily stowed away
- A wine cooler that uses air-conditioned air to keep beverages chilled
- 12-volt sockets for powering devices
- Cup holders strategically placed throughout the interior
Outdoor Living and Camping
The VW California Beach offers a range of features that enhance the outdoor living and camping experience. From its versatile pop-up roof to the integrated awning and camping furniture, this camper van is designed to make outdoor adventures comfortable and enjoyable.Pop-up Roof
The California Beach comes with a factory-fitted pop-top roof, which is sleeker and more integrated than aftermarket alternatives. For the Ocean model, an electric hydraulic roof is standard, while the Coast model features a mechanical roof. To open the electric roof, users must first turn on the ignition, open the blind, and select ‘open’ from the menu. The mechanical roof requires manually unlocking two safety catches before pushing it open. When closing the roof, it’s crucial to ensure the bed is down, and no bedding or pillows are left on top. For both roof types, it’s recommended to open a window or door to allow air to flow freely during operation. The pop-up roof significantly increases headroom, making the van more spacious for daytime use and providing a comfortable sleeping area for two people.Awning
The VW California Beach comes with a standard factory-fitted wind-out awning, which can be enhanced with additional accessories. Many owners opt for awning rooms or drive-away awnings to extend their living space. Popular options include:- Vango Galli CC II Air Driveaway Awning
- Dometic HUB 1.0 Inflatable Shelter
- Vango Versos Air Driveaway Awning
Camping Furniture
The California Beach is renowned for its integrated camping chairs, which are stored in a pod built into the rear part of the boot area. These lightweight aluminium chairs are easily accessible and make a significant difference when camping or on day trips. The chairs work well with the camping table, which is another integrated feature of the van. To access the chairs:- Open the tailgate
- Unzip the storage pod
- Remove the chairs
Outdoor Cooking
While the California Beach may not come with a built-in kitchen, many owners have found creative solutions for outdoor cooking. Popular options include:- Portable camping stoves, such as the Coleman dual burner Petrol stove
- Multi-fuel camping stoves for versatility
- Barbecues for use on the deck or campsite
Driving Experience and Performance
The VW California Beach offers a unique driving experience that combines the practicality of a camper van with the handling characteristics of a more compact vehicle. Built on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform, this versatile vehicle provides a comfortable and capable ride for both long journeys and everyday use.Handling
Despite its size, the California Beach handles impressively well for a van. It remains stable at high speeds, even exceeding 100 mph on German highways. The steering is precise and well-weighted, making it easy to place the vehicle on the road. However, due to its height, the California does exhibit some body roll when cornering at moderate speeds. Compared to other camper vans, it stays more upright and feels more agile, particularly when navigating twisting B roads. The suspension, while firmer than some competitors, can sometimes struggle with the vehicle’s weight on particularly turbulent stretches. It may thump and thud over potholes and sharp bumps, especially on the 18-inch wheels. For those prioritising comfort, alternatives like the Marco Polo might be worth considering.Engine Options
The California Beach offers a range of engine options to suit different needs:- 2.0-litre TDI diesel engines:
- 148bhp version (base model)
- 198bhp version (available in higher trims)
- TSI petrol engines (specifications for UK market not confirmed)
- All-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid (eHybrid) with 242bhp
Fuel Efficiency
Fuel efficiency is a strong point for the California Beach, especially considering its size and weight. The diesel engines can achieve over 30mpg in official economy tests, with the TDI 150 recording 33.5mpg during real-world testing. Even when driven more aggressively, fuel consumption remains reasonable, with figures around 20-26 mpg reported. The upcoming plug-in hybrid model promises even better efficiency, with an estimated electric range of up to 62 miles on a single charge. This variant will also be capable of towing up to two tonnes.Technology Features
The California Beach incorporates several technological advancements to enhance the driving and camping experience:- A vertical tablet-style control unit for managing various camper features
- “Cali on Tour” app for remote operation of vehicle functions
- Infotainment system with Golf-like digital dash
- Three-pin and USB sockets for charging devices
- Optional 4Motion four-wheel drive system for improved traction
Conclusion
The VW California Beach stands out as a versatile and well-designed camper van, offering a perfect blend of comfort and functionality for outdoor enthusiasts. Its clever interior layout, adaptable sleeping arrangements, and thoughtful features make it an ideal choice for everything from weekend getaways to extended road trips. The van’s driving experience, coupled with its range of engine options and fuel efficiency, ensures that the journey is just as enjoyable as the destination. For those seeking adventure without sacrificing comfort, the California Beach provides a compelling option in the world of camper vans. Its ability to serve as both a daily driver and a home away from home gives it a unique advantage in the market. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or new to the world of van life, the VW California Beach offers a balanced and practical solution to explore the great outdoors in style and comfort.FAQs

Swiss vans are a fantastic company to deal with .From the first meeting we had they delivered everything that was asked of them , my transporter was fitted with everything I asked for with expertise as my expectations was met to the letter .if you are thinking of getting your self a transporter that gets everything you expect and ask for this is definitely the company to use . I was worried first as I shoped about and some of the quotes I received was astronomical with other companies, but I feel as a customer a customer of swiss vans i looked after in everything that I was promised so I would definitely recommend these guys and I will no doubt use their services again in the future..... David jones .... thanks Tom Jones for all your help ....

I don't normally leave reviews but I can't recommend these guys enough, seriously - anyone that's looking to buy a van or other commercial vehicle, give these guy's a call, ask for Tom because you won't be disappointed...!!!
I needed a commercial vehicle for private use as I'm not self employed and therefore paying the VAT upfront is quite a chunk of money to loose so needed it to be wrapped up in the monthly repayment. I'd already tried several other companies before Swiss Vans and non of them were interested. I'd pretty much given up and was looking at 2nd Hand vans until I came across Swiss Vans advert on Facebook. I sent a message (with very low expectation) and the next day I was contacted by Tom Jones (yes, a Welshman called Tom Jones who sells vans...!!!). Tom is the first person that actually took the time to listen to what I needed and how I needed it work. He went away and came back a couple of hours later and explained that initially this wasn't going to be easy to achieve but to leave it with him and that he'd call me the next day. To be honest, I didn't think I'd hear from him again but true to his word he called me the next day and said that he had it all worked out, all agreed and all in place ready to go. Tom fired over the paperwork, I paid the small holding deposit and a few weeks later the vans been delivered and completely exceeded my expectations.
I'm a great believer that 'People buy People', yes Swiss Vans are truly excellent and I'd go as far as to say that in my experience, they're better than the rest but like all other companies they're only as good as the people they have working for them. Tom - I can't thank you enough, you're a credit to Swiss Vans, and Swiss Vans - you're outstanding.
