VW ID Buzz GTX: The High-Performance Electric Van
Volkswagen is making waves in the electric vehicle market with its latest offering, the ID Buzz GTX. This high-performance electric van combines the nostalgic charm of the classic VW Bus with cutting-edge technology and impressive power. The ID Buzz GTX is set to revolutionize the electric van segment, offering a unique blend of practicality and performance that has caught the attention of enthusiasts and families alike. Source The VW ID Buzz GTX boasts impressive specifications that set it apart from its competitors. With its powerful electric drivetrain, enhanced styling, and advanced features, this vehicle promises to deliver an exhilarating driving experience. As the GTX variant of the popular ID Buzz, it offers increased performance without compromising on versatility. While the ID Buzz GTX price and UK availability are yet to be confirmed, anticipation is building for this groundbreaking electric van that combines style, substance, and sustainability. See all ID Buzz for sale Power and Performance The VW ID Buzz GTX represents a significant leap forward in electric van performance, offering a blend of power and efficiency that sets it apart from its predecessors and competitors. Dual-Motor Setup Unlike the standard ID Buzz, which relies on a single rear-mounted motor, the GTX variant boasts a dual-motor configuration. This setup features an electric motor on each axle, providing the vehicle with all-wheel drive capability. The combined output of these motors is an impressive 335 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. This power output makes the ID Buzz GTX the most powerful Microbus Volkswagen has ever produced, surpassing even some of their performance-oriented combustion engine vehicles like the new Golf R. Acceleration and Top Speed The dual-motor setup translates to remarkable acceleration for a vehicle of this size and type. The short-wheelbase (SWB) model of the ID Buzz GTX can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 6.1 seconds, while the long-wheelbase (LWB) version accomplishes the same feat in 6.4 seconds. This slight difference in acceleration times is due to the LWB model’s higher kerb weight. For comparison, the standard ID Buzz with its single 286 horsepower motor takes 7.6 seconds for the SWB version and 7.9 seconds for the LWB version to reach 62 mph from a standstill. In terms of top speed, Volkswagen has electronically limited the ID Buzz GTX to 160 km/h (approximately 99 mph). This limitation likely serves to balance performance with efficiency and safety considerations. Battery Options The ID Buzz GTX offers different battery options depending on the wheelbase chosen: Short-Wheelbase Model: Battery Capacity: 79 kWh (usable) Range: Up to 283 miles (official figure, depending on exact specifications) Long-Wheelbase Model: Battery Capacity: 86 kWh Range: Up to 291 miles (official figure) It’s worth noting that Volkswagen has made improvements to the battery technology in the GTX model. For the short-wheelbase version, they managed to increase the capacity by 2 kWh while maintaining roughly the same physical dimensions as the outgoing Buzz’s battery. This was achieved by incorporating more energy-dense cells into the pack. The larger 86 kWh battery in the long-wheelbase model provides an extended range, making it suitable for longer journeys. This range puts the ID Buzz GTX ahead of some competitors like the Mercedes EQV, although it falls short of the range offered by models such as the Kia EV9 or Peugeot e-5008. To further enhance efficiency and range, the ID Buzz GTX can be equipped with an optional heat pump. This feature helps to heat the interior while using less energy from the high-voltage battery, potentially extending the vehicle’s range in colder conditions. The combination of powerful dual motors and efficient battery options allows the ID Buzz GTX to offer enhanced performance without significantly compromising its practicality. The all-wheel-drive system not only improves acceleration and handling but also increases the vehicle’s towing capacity. The SWB version can tow up to 1,800 kg (braked, 8% gradient), while the LWB model has a maximum towing capacity of 1,600 kg. These figures represent substantial increases of 800 kg and 600 kg respectively over the standard ID Buzz models. Design and Styling The VW ID Buzz GTX represents a bold reimagining of the iconic T1, bringing its legendary design into the age of electric mobility. Volkswagen has successfully reinterpreted the classic van with the characteristic design DNA of the ID models, creating a vehicle that pays homage to its roots while embracing modern esthetics and functionality. Exterior Enhancements The ID Buzz GTX boasts a distinctive exterior that sets it apart from its standard counterparts. A defining feature is the flowing silhouette with a flat and elongated roof line that runs from front to rear, creating a sleek and aerodynamic profile. The compact proportions and small turning circle ensure great everyday usability, allowing the ID Buzz GTX to maneuver dynamically through urban environments despite its dimensions. The front end of the GTX variant has been individualized to emphasize its sporty character. It features a bumper in GTX styling with a black air intake grille in honeycomb design, complemented by new side air guide elements. These modifications contribute to a dynamic and distinctive appearance. New daytime running lights are integrated into the bumper on both sides, further enhancing the vehicle’s visual appeal. All black body elements, including the new air intake grille, air guide elements, GTX lettering, and exterior mirror housings, are finished in high-gloss black. This creates a cohesive and premium look that distinguishes the GTX model from the standard ID Buzz. The GTX variant comes standard with Solna 20-inch alloy wheels, but the range is supplemented by two new 21-inch alloy wheel options. These larger wheels not only enhance the vehicle’s sporty appearance but also improve its stance on the road. A notable addition to the color palette is the exclusive Cherry Red solid paint finish, which can be specified with Mono Silver metallic as a two-tone paint finish. This unique color option allows owners to further personalize their ID Buzz GTX and make a bold statement on the road. Interior Updates The interior of the ID Buzz GTX has received a thorough overhaul to match its enhanced performance capabilities. Dark tones dominate the cabin, underlining the sporty character of this most powerful ID Buzz variant. One of the standout features is the black headliner, which is exclusive to the GTX models in the product line. The seats have been upgraded to electrically adjustable comfort seats with memory function in the front. These seats feature a specific GTX design, enhanced by covers in black ArtVelours Eco microfleece with a new diamond pattern. Red contrasting seams and red piping add a touch of sportiness and visual interest to the upholstery. The multifunction steering wheel has also been refined with red cross-stitching, a red application on the center trim, and integrated GTX lettering in chrome. These details create a cohesive design language throughout the interior, reinforcing the GTX’s performance-oriented nature. GTX-Specific Features Several features are unique to the GTX variant, further distinguishing it from the standard ID Buzz models. The cabin now features a slightly larger 12.9-inch infotainment system, an upgrade from the 12.0-inch screen found in the outgoing Buzz. This larger screen is equipped with a faster processor, significantly improving the touchscreen’s responsiveness and overall user experience. For the long-wheelbase version, Volkswagen offers an optional panoramic sunroof with smart glass. This multi-layered smart glass incorporates an integrated liquid crystal film that can be electronically switched between transparent and opaque states. This feature not only enhances the interior ambiance but also evokes memories of the legendary “Samba Bus,” transferring the typical roof windows of the classic car into the present day. The ID Buzz GTX’s design and styling successfully blend nostalgia with modernity, creating a vehicle that stands out in the electric van segment. Its exterior enhancements, interior updates, and GTX-specific features work together to deliver a compelling package that appeals to both performance enthusiasts and those seeking a stylish, versatile electric vehicle. Driving Dynamics The VW ID Buzz GTX offers a driving experience that combines power, precision, and comfort, setting new standards for electric vans. Its advanced features and thoughtful engineering result in a vehicle that handles remarkably well for its size and weight. All-Wheel Drive System The ID Buzz GTX boasts an electric all-wheel drive system, powered by two electric motors. This dual-motor setup not only enhances performance but also provides superior traction and stability. The GTX variant’s 4MOTION drive system offers significant advantages, particularly when towing on wet or loose surfaces. This makes the ID Buzz GTX an ideal towing vehicle, capable of handling boat or horse trailers with ease. The all-wheel drive system contributes to the impressive towing capacity of the ID Buzz GTX. The short-wheelbase version can pull up to 1,800 kg (braked, 8% gradient), while the long-wheelbase model has a maximum towing capacity of 1,600 kg. These figures represent substantial increases over the standard ID Buzz models, making the GTX variant a versatile choice for those who need to tow heavy loads. Handling Characteristics Despite its size, the ID Buzz GTX demonstrates surprising agility and stability on the road. The battery pack’s low-mounted position between the axles contributes to a low center of gravity, resulting in excellent body control. This design choice helps the vehicle maintain composure through tight turns and reduces body roll, a common issue in high-sided vehicles. The steering feels direct and well-weighted, allowing for precise control and confident maneuvering. The GTX responds more immediately to steering inputs compared to its predecessor, the VW Multivan, enhancing the overall driving experience. Even at higher speeds, the ID Buzz GTX remains stable and resistant to crosswinds, cutting through the air cleanly with wind noise levels comparable to those of a large SUV. While the ID Buzz GTX handles admirably for a vehicle of its class, it’s important to note that its considerable weight does impact cornering ability on more challenging roads. Drivers should be mindful of this when navigating tight bends or country lanes, as pushing too hard can lead to noticeable understeer. The ride quality strikes a good balance between comfort and sportiness. Although it may feel slightly firm around town, the suspension effectively absorbs bumps and potholes without compromising comfort. At motorway speeds, the ID Buzz GTX offers a smooth and refined ride, even when equipped with the optional 21-inch alloy wheels. Regenerative Braking The ID Buzz GTX features an advanced regenerative braking system that enhances both efficiency and driving dynamics. The system offers two primary modes: D (Drive) and B (Brake). In the default D mode, the vehicle coasts when the driver releases the accelerator, making it easier to maintain speed on faster, flowing roads. Switching to B mode activates a more aggressive regenerative braking effect. This allows for near one-pedal driving in urban environments, reducing the need for frequent use of the brake pedal. The system’s strength automatically adjusts based on road layout and traffic conditions, optimizing energy recovery and driving comfort. One notable improvement in the GTX variant is the enhanced regenerative braking capability. The addition of a front motor allows for stronger regenerative braking without compromising vehicle stability. This means drivers can often bring the vehicle to a complete stop simply by lifting off the accelerator, further improving energy efficiency and reducing wear on the conventional brakes. While the regenerative braking system is generally effective, some drivers might find the lack of multiple regeneration levels limiting compared to some competitors. Additionally, the conventional brake pedal requires a firm touch to bring the 2.5-ton vehicle to a halt, which may take some getting used to for drivers new to electric vehicles of this size. Practicality and Versatility The VW ID Buzz GTX stands out in the electric vehicle market for its exceptional practicality and versatility. This van-derived model offers a range of features that make it an ideal choice for families and those requiring ample space and flexibility. Seating Configurations The ID Buzz GTX offers various seating configurations to suit different needs. The standard wheelbase version is available as a five-seater with a 40:60 split three-seat bench in the second row, or as a six-seater with two individual seats each in the second and third rows. The long-wheelbase variant provides even more options, including a seven-seater configuration with a three-seat bench in the second row and two individual seats in the third row. One of the key advantages of the ID Buzz GTX is its electrically operated sliding side doors. These doors provide easy access to the back seats, surpassing the convenience offered by traditional hinged doors. The tall roof design further enhances accessibility, making it easier to seat children or load cargo. The seating arrangement is highly flexible, with the second-row seats offering longitudinal adjustment. In the standard wheelbase model, these seats can be moved by 150 mm, while the long-wheelbase version allows for 200 mm of adjustment. This feature allows passengers to optimize legroom and cargo space as needed. Cargo Space The ID Buzz GTX excels in cargo capacity, offering impressive space for luggage and equipment. In the standard wheelbase five-seater configuration, the luggage compartment volume ranges from 1,121 liters (loaded to the upper edge of the rear seat backrests) to 2,123 liters (rear bench seat folded down, loaded up to the upper edge of the front seat backrests). The extended ID Buzz GTX provides even more space. When loaded up to the upper edge of the second-row seat backrests, it offers a capacity of 1,340 liters. This can be increased to 2,469 liters when loaded to the first row of seats. Even in the seven-seater configuration, there’s still 306 liters of load space available behind the third row. To enhance versatility, both ID Buzz GTX models can be equipped with a Multiflex board. This feature creates a second loading level and, when the rear seats are folded down, a flat load area. The cargo area is square with flat sides, offering a distance of 1,204 mm between the wheelarches and a maximum of 1,330 mm (in SWB form) from the seat backs to the tailgate. Towing Capacity The ID Buzz GTX demonstrates impressive towing capabilities, setting it apart from other electric vehicles in its class. Thanks to its enhanced power and 4MOTION drive system, the GTX variant offers significantly higher maximum trailer weights compared to the standard ID Buzz models. The standard wheelbase version of the ID Buzz GTX can effortlessly pull up to 1,800 kg (braked, 8% gradient), while the long-wheelbase model has a maximum towing capacity of 1,600 kg. These figures represent substantial increases of 800 kg and 600 kg respectively over the standard ID Buzz models. The 4MOTION system provides excellent traction advantages, particularly when towing a trailer on wet or loose surfaces. This makes the ID Buzz GTX an ideal towing vehicle for various applications, such as hauling boat or horse trailers, which often require movement on slippery terrain. Technology and Connectivity The VW ID Buzz GTX stands at the forefront of automotive technology, offering a suite of advanced features that enhance both the driving experience and overall connectivity. From its state-of-the-art infotainment system to its comprehensive driver assistance features and efficient charging capabilities, the ID Buzz GTX showcases Volkswagen’s commitment to innovation in the electric vehicle sector. Infotainment System At the heart of the ID Buzz GTX’s technology offerings is its upgraded infotainment system. The vehicle now boasts a slightly larger 12.9-inch touchscreen display, an improvement over the 12.0-inch screen found in the previous Buzz model. This enhancement is not just about size; the new system also features a faster processor, significantly improving the touchscreen’s responsiveness and overall user experience. The result is a more intuitive and less clunky interface, allowing drivers and passengers to navigate through various functions with ease. Driver Assistance Features The ID Buzz GTX comes equipped with an impressive array of driver assistance systems, many of which are included as standard. These features not only enhance safety but also pave the way for more autonomous driving capabilities: Car2X: This system utilizes swarm data to provide warnings about dangers in the immediate vicinity, enhancing overall road safety. Front Assist: Includes pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, acting as a surrounding area monitoring system with an emergency braking function. PreCrash Occupant Protection: This system includes features like tensioning of safety belts in an emergency situation. Dynamic Road Sign Display and Lane Assist: Standard features in the ID Buzz Pro model. Travel Assist with Swarm Data: This optional system represents a significant leap towards highly automated driving. It can keep the vehicle in lane, maintain distance from the vehicle in front, and ensure adherence to set speed limits. The system adapts to the driver’s style and can position the vehicle off-center in the lane if preferred. With swarm data, Travel Assist can function even with only one identified road lane marking, increasing its effectiveness on country roads without central markings. Assisted Lane Changing: At speeds above 90 km/h on motorways, the system can actively support lane changes when activated by the driver using the turn signal. Park Assist Plus with Memory Function: This innovative system allows the ID Buzz to learn and remember up to five individual parking maneuvers. It can automatically execute these learned procedures, making parking in tight spaces like carports or garages much easier. Charging Capabilities The ID Buzz GTX offers impressive charging capabilities, ensuring that drivers can quickly and efficiently recharge their vehicles: Battery Options: Standard Wheelbase: 79 kWh usable capacity Long Wheelbase: 86 kWh capacity Charging Speeds: AC Charging: Up to 11 kW DC Fast Charging: Up to 185 kW (standard battery) or 200 kW (larger battery) Charging Times: AC Charging (0-100%): Approximately 510 minutes DC Fast Charging (20-80%): As quick as 20-27 minutes Range and Efficiency: Real-world range: Approximately 205 miles Energy Consumption: 2.6 miles per kWh These charging capabilities, combined with the vehicle’s efficiency, make the ID Buzz GTX a practical choice for both daily commutes and longer journeys. The fast-charging option, in particular, allows for quick top-ups during extended trips, minimizing downtime and maximizing the vehicle’s usability. Conclusion The VW ID Buzz GTX has a significant impact on the electric vehicle market, blending nostalgic design with cutting-edge technology. Its powerful dual-motor setup, enhanced styling, and advanced features offer an exciting driving experience while maintaining practicality. The vehicle’s impressive towing capacity, flexible interior, and array of driver assistance systems make it a versatile choice for families and enthusiasts alike. To wrap up, the ID Buzz GTX represents Volkswagen’s commitment to push the boundaries of electric mobility. With its blend of performance, style, and functionality, it’s poised to shake up the electric van segment. I don't normally leave reviews but I can't recommend these guys enough, seriously - anyone that's looking to buy a van or other commercial vehicle, give these guy's a call, ask for Tom because you won't be disappointed...!!!
I needed a commercial vehicle for private use as I'm not self employed and therefore paying the VAT upfront is quite a chunk of money to loose so needed it to be wrapped up in the monthly repayment. I'd already tried several other companies before Swiss Vans and non of them were interested. I'd pretty much given up and was looking at 2nd Hand vans until I came across Swiss Vans advert on Facebook. I sent a message (with very low expectation) and the next day I was contacted by Tom Jones (yes, a Welshman called Tom Jones who sells vans...!!!). Tom is the first person that actually took the time to listen to what I needed and how I needed it work. He went away and came back a couple of hours later and explained that initially this wasn't going to be easy to achieve but to leave it with him and that he'd call me the next day. To be honest, I didn't think I'd hear from him again but true to his word he called me the next day and said that he had it all worked out, all agreed and all in place ready to go. Tom fired over the paperwork, I paid the small holding deposit and a few weeks later the vans been delivered and completely exceeded my expectations.
I'm a great believer that 'People buy People', yes Swiss Vans are truly excellent and I'd go as far as to say that in my experience, they're better than the rest but like all other companies they're only as good as the people they have working for them. Tom - I can't thank you enough, you're a credit to Swiss Vans, and Swiss Vans - you're outstanding.
