Factors to Consider When Buying
When purchasing a VW Crafter campervan, there are several crucial factors to take into account. These considerations will help ensure that the chosen vehicle meets the buyer’s needs and expectations.Budget
The cost of acquiring a VW Crafter campervan can vary significantly depending on various factors. A basic conversion can start from as little as £1,000 for insulation and heating, while a top-spec professional conversion can cost upwards of £35,000. The final price depends on several elements:- DIY vs. Professional Conversion: Opting for a DIY conversion can save money, but it requires time, skills, and effort.
- Style and Materials: High-end finishes and quality materials will naturally increase the overall cost of the conversion.
- Electrical Setup: The complexity of the electrical system can significantly impact the price. Solar panels, batteries, inverters, and wiring all contribute to the cost. Advanced electrical systems with top-spec brands like Victron and Renology, along with lithium batteries, will be more expensive.
- Van Size, Age, and Model: The base vehicle’s specifications will affect the overall cost.
Size and Layout
The VW Crafter offers ample space for conversion, measuring nearly 7 meters in length and almost 3 meters in height for the long wheelbase (LWB) model. This spaciousness allows for various layout options:- Bathroom: The Crafter’s size permits the inclusion of a full bathroom, a luxury not always possible in smaller campervans.
- Kitchen and Dining Area: There’s room for a complete kitchen setup and a dedicated dining area.
- Sleeping Arrangements: The Crafter can accommodate a fixed bed at the rear, with additional storage space underneath. Consider options like the RIB bed, electric raising beds, or split single beds.
- Seating: It’s not unusual to have a four-berth camper with five seat belts, allowing for additional passengers when needed.
Amenities and Equipment
The amenities and equipment chosen for the campervan will significantly impact both the functionality and the cost of the conversion. Here are some key considerations:- Cooking Facilities: Decide on the type of cooking setup needed. Options range from simple portable gas stoves to fully electric setups. Consider the inclusion of appliances like air fryers, which are becoming popular due to their space efficiency and versatility.
- Water System: Install both fresh and gray water tanks. Include a sink with a mixer tap for convenience. The water system should be easily refillable and drainable.
- Power Supply: A leisure battery is essential for powering the campervan’s electrical needs. Consider installing solar panels for off-grid energy independence.
- Refrigeration: A compact 12V fridge is ideal for keeping food fresh. The choice between a standard 12V fridge or a more efficient compressor fridge will depend on power availability and budget.
- Heating and Insulation: Proper insulation is crucial for comfort in all seasons. Consider installing a heating system for colder weather.
- Ventilation: Install roof vents or fans to ensure good airflow. Adding windows with built-in ventilation can provide additional fresh air.
- Storage: Maximize space with overhead cabinets, under-bed storage, and clever use of nooks and crannies.
- Lighting: Install energy-efficient LED lights, including dimmable options for ambiance.

For instance, some dealerships offer various conversion layouts based on the VW Crafter, such as the Barra, Mull, and Harris designs. These conversions can include features like enclosed toilets and showers, ample storage space, and even pop-top elevating roofs. Many dealerships are recognized as Motorhome Qualified Converters by Volkswagen, ensuring they meet rigorous quality standards. This certification can provide buyers with added confidence in the quality and reliability of their purchase. Some dealerships also offer the flexibility of either supplying a brand new Crafter van built to exact specifications or converting a customer-supplied van. When visiting dealerships, potential buyers can expect to find a range of options, from basic models to fully-equipped luxury conversions. These platforms offer a wide selection of both new and used vehicles, often with detailed descriptions and multiple photos to aid in the decision-making process. Private Sellers
Private sellers offer another avenue for finding VW Crafter campervans, often at competitive prices. These sellers may be individuals who have personally converted their vans or are selling professionally converted vehicles. When dealing with private sellers, buyers might find unique or custom conversions that aren’t available through dealerships. However, it’s crucial to exercise caution and thoroughly inspect the vehicle before making a purchase. Some advantages of buying from private sellers include:- Potential for lower prices compared to dealerships
- Opportunity to learn about the van’s history directly from the owner
- Possibility of finding rare or unique conversions
Inspecting and Test Driving
When considering the purchase of a VW Crafter campervan, a thorough inspection and test drive are crucial steps in the decision-making process. These steps help potential buyers identify any issues, assess the vehicle’s condition, and determine if it meets their needs and expectations. What to Look For
During the inspection, buyers should pay close attention to various aspects of the campervan:- Exterior Condition: Examine the vehicle for dents, scratches, rust, or signs of previous repairs or accidents. Check the body panels for any misalignment or inconsistencies in paint color, which could indicate past damage.
- Interior Condition: Inspect the upholstery, dashboard, and other interior components for wear, stains, or damage. Pay special attention to the camper conversion elements, such as the kitchen units, seating areas, and sleeping arrangements.
- Mechanical Components: Take a close look at the engine, transmission, brakes, and suspension. Listen for any unusual noises or vibrations that could indicate potential issues.
- Electrical Systems: Test all lights, gages, and other electrical components to ensure they are functioning properly. This includes both the vehicle’s standard electrical system and any additional systems installed for the camper conversion.
- Gas Safety: If the campervan has a gas system for cooking or heating, ask about its installation and maintenance history. Check for a gas locker, proper ventilation, and a carbon monoxide alarm.
- Water System: Inspect the plumbing for any signs of leaks or water damage. Ask about the water tank’s capacity and condition.
- Tires: Examine the tires for adequate tread depth and even wear. Uneven wear could indicate alignment or suspension issues.
Questions to Ask
During the inspection and test drive, it’s important to ask the seller relevant questions about the campervan’s history and condition:- How many previous owners has the vehicle had?
- Has the campervan been involved in any accidents or undergone significant repairs?
- What is the vehicle’s service history? Have all recommended maintenance procedures been performed?
- Who installed the camper conversion, and when was it done?
- Are there any outstanding loans or liens on the vehicle?
- Is the campervan still under warranty? If so, what does the warranty cover?
- Has the leisure battery been recently replaced?
- When was the gas system last inspected by a registered engineer?

- Smoke or unusual smells coming from the engine or exhaust
- Uneven or excessive tire wear
- Difficulty steering or braking
- Signs of water damage or leaks inside the camper

I don't normally leave reviews but I can't recommend these guys enough, seriously - anyone that's looking to buy a van or other commercial vehicle, give these guy's a call, ask for Tom because you won't be disappointed...!!!
I needed a commercial vehicle for private use as I'm not self employed and therefore paying the VAT upfront is quite a chunk of money to loose so needed it to be wrapped up in the monthly repayment. I'd already tried several other companies before Swiss Vans and non of them were interested. I'd pretty much given up and was looking at 2nd Hand vans until I came across Swiss Vans advert on Facebook. I sent a message (with very low expectation) and the next day I was contacted by Tom Jones (yes, a Welshman called Tom Jones who sells vans...!!!). Tom is the first person that actually took the time to listen to what I needed and how I needed it work. He went away and came back a couple of hours later and explained that initially this wasn't going to be easy to achieve but to leave it with him and that he'd call me the next day. To be honest, I didn't think I'd hear from him again but true to his word he called me the next day and said that he had it all worked out, all agreed and all in place ready to go. Tom fired over the paperwork, I paid the small holding deposit and a few weeks later the vans been delivered and completely exceeded my expectations.
I'm a great believer that 'People buy People', yes Swiss Vans are truly excellent and I'd go as far as to say that in my experience, they're better than the rest but like all other companies they're only as good as the people they have working for them. Tom - I can't thank you enough, you're a credit to Swiss Vans, and Swiss Vans - you're outstanding.
