The Ford Transit Custom Trail is equipped with a range of features that make it well-suited for adventurous pursuits. These enhancements contribute to its versatility and capability in various terrains and conditions.Quaife Limited-Slip Differential
One of the standout features of the Ford Transit Custom Trail is its Quaife limited-slip differential (LSD). This advanced technology, developed by Quaife, a renowned authority on differentials, significantly enhances the van’s traction capabilities. The Quaife ATB (Automatic Torque Biasing) Helical LSD is a direct replacement for the standard open differential and offers several benefits:- Maximizes traction and minimizes wheel spin
- Eliminates torque steer and snatching
- Improves handling balance and braking capabilities
All-Terrain Tires Ford Transit Custom Trail
To complement the enhanced traction provided by the Quaife LSD, the Ford Transit Custom Trail can be equipped with all-terrain tires. While the stock tires are suitable for most conditions, upgrading to all-terrain options can significantly improve the van’s off-road capabilities. One popular choice among Transit Custom Trail owners is the BFGoodrich KO2 LT255/70R16 E tires. These tires offer several advantages:- Outstanding traction in mud and snow
- Increased ground clearance
- Larger tire size without requiring modifications to the van body
- Improved overall appearance

Comparison with Competitors
The Ford Transit Custom Trail faces stiff competition in the mid-size commercial van market. Two of its main rivals are the Volkswagen Transporter and the Mercedes-Benz Vito. Each of these vehicles has its own strengths and unique features that appeal to different segments of the market.VW Transporter
The Volkswagen Transporter has a long-standing reputation in the commercial van sector, having sold over 12 million units since its introduction in 1948. Now in its sixth generation, the Transporter offers a comprehensive engine lineup, including four diesel power ratings (83bhp/220Nm, 101bhp/250Nm, 148bhp/340Nm, and 201bhp/450Nm) on the 2.0TDi engine, as well as two outputs (148bhp/280Nm and 201bhp/350Nm) on the 2.0TSi unit. One of the Transporter’s standout features is its transmission options. Customers can choose between a 5 or 6-speed manual, or a 7-speed DSG automatic, which is widely regarded as the smoothest and most decisive automatic in its class. The Transporter also offers the option of 4-wheel drive (4Motion), providing additional versatility for those who need it. However, the Transporter’s premium positioning comes at a cost. It is the most expensive mid-sized van to buy, both new and used. This higher price point is justified by its well-built construction, well-appointed cab, excellent fit-and-finish, and the widest selection of engines in its class.Mercedes-Benz Vito
The Mercedes-Benz Vito, introduced in 1996, is the youngest competitor in this comparison. The current third-generation model, launched in 2014, takes its name from Vitoria, Spain, where it is manufactured. The Vito stands out with its lower profile compared to its rivals, and in its ‘Sport’ trim, it features 17-inch five-spoke alloys, color-coded bumpers, and chrome trim for a more dynamic appearance. Under the hood, the Vito offers two engine options: a 1.6-liter diesel from Renault for front-wheel-drive models, available in 88bhp/230Nm and 114bhp/270Nm outputs, and Mercedes’ own 2.1-liter diesel for rear-wheel-drive models, with outputs of 136bhp/330Nm, 163bhp/380Nm, and 190bhp/440Nm. The 2.1-liter engine is paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission (7G Tronic). While the Vito impresses with its looks, handling, fuel economy, and competitive pricing, it’s starting to show its age in the cab design. The dashboard and instrument panel feel dated compared to newer competitors, and the lack of a touchscreen display and carpeted bulkhead covering are noticeable omissions. Additionally, some users have reported issues with squeaks and rattles emanating from the bulkhead.Vauxhall Vivaro
The Vauxhall Vivaro offers a compelling package in the mid-size van segment. It’s notable for being manufactured in the UK, a unique selling point in this market. The current generation Vivaro, introduced in 2019, shares its platform with the Peugeot Expert and Citroen Dispatch, a move that has been well-received by both loyal customers and newcomers to the brand. Engine options for the Vivaro include 1.5-liter diesel engines in 100PS and 120PS variants, as well as 2.0-liter units producing 145PS or 180PS. An 8-speed automatic transmission is available with the 145PS engine and comes standard with the 180PS unit. The Vivaro Electric has gained recognition in the industry, offering a balance of practical payload capacity and impressive range, with the 75kWh battery pack providing an official WLTP Combined cycle range of up to 205 miles. In terms of features, the Vivaro offers competitive specifications across its trim levels. Even the entry-level Prime trim includes cruise control, air conditioning, a 7-inch multimedia touchscreen, and rear parking sensors. Higher trim levels add features such as a fully-integrated sat nav system, Apple and Android smartphone integration, and a panoramic rear-view camera.Pricing and Value Proposition Ford Transit Custom Trail
The Ford Transit Custom Trail offers a compelling value proposition, balancing its premium features with competitive pricing. This versatile van caters to a wide range of needs, from commercial use to adventure-seeking individuals.Trim Levels
Ford provides several trim levels for the Transit Custom, each offering a unique set of features and price points:- Leader: The entry-level trim, ideal for those prioritizing affordability while still getting essential functionality.
- Trend: Building on the Leader, this trim adds a SYNC-3 touchscreen display and enhanced exterior styling elements.
- Limited: This trim level elevates the van’s esthetics with alloy wheels, chrome interior features, and body-colored bumpers.
- Trail: Designed for those seeking a rugged appearance, the Trail trim features a unique front grille, black alloy wheels, and protective plastic cladding.
- Active: The top-tier trim, offering larger alloy wheels, roof rails as standard, and additional style enhancements.
Optional Extras Ford Transit Custom Trail
The Transit Custom offers an extensive list of optional extras, allowing buyers to customize their van to suit specific needs. Some popular options include:- Reversing cameras
- Satellite navigation
- Liftgate (as an alternative to barn doors)
- Three-pin socket
- Self-parking system
- Heated seats
Running Costs Ford Transit Custom Trail
While the initial purchase price is a crucial factor, potential buyers should also consider the Transit Custom Trail’s running costs:- Fuel Economy: The van has demonstrated impressive fuel efficiency, with users reporting an average of 40 mpg in mixed driving conditions. This figure only dips into the high 30s when fully loaded or carrying multiple passengers.
- Eco Mode: This feature can further enhance fuel economy by restricting the van’s top speed to 70 mph and limiting acceleration. Users have reported gains of around 3 mpg when using Eco Mode on long motorway journeys.
- Benefit in Kind (BiK): Commercial vehicles like the Transit Custom enjoy a fixed-rate BiK of £3,500, which can be split between multiple employees if used for business purposes. This can result in significant tax savings compared to non-hybrid SUVs or large family cars.
- Insurance: Insurance costs vary based on individual circumstances, but the Transit Custom’s insurance groups are recommended by the Association of British Insurers.
Conclusion Ford Transit Custom Trail

Its versatility has made it a popular choice for both businesses and individuals, with its rugged design, advanced technology, and impressive performance capabilities setting new standards in the van segment. The vehicle’s ability to transition seamlessly between work and leisure activities has contributed to its growing appeal, particularly among outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking a multi-purpose vehicle. Swiss vans are a fantastic company to deal with .From the first meeting we had they delivered everything that was asked of them , my transporter was fitted with everything I asked for with expertise as my expectations was met to the letter .if you are thinking of getting your self a transporter that gets everything you expect and ask for this is definitely the company to use . I was worried first as I shoped about and some of the quotes I received was astronomical with other companies, but I feel as a customer a customer of swiss vans i looked after in everything that I was promised so I would definitely recommend these guys and I will no doubt use their services again in the future..... I don't normally leave reviews but I can't recommend these guys enough, seriously - anyone that's looking to buy a van or other commercial vehicle, give these guy's a call, ask for Tom because you won't be disappointed...!!!
I needed a commercial vehicle for private use as I'm not self employed and therefore paying the VAT upfront is quite a chunk of money to loose so needed it to be wrapped up in the monthly repayment. I'd already tried several other companies before Swiss Vans and non of them were interested. I'd pretty much given up and was looking at 2nd Hand vans until I came across Swiss Vans advert on Facebook. I sent a message (with very low expectation) and the next day I was contacted by Tom Jones (yes, a Welshman called Tom Jones who sells vans...!!!). Tom is the first person that actually took the time to listen to what I needed and how I needed it work. He went away and came back a couple of hours later and explained that initially this wasn't going to be easy to achieve but to leave it with him and that he'd call me the next day. To be honest, I didn't think I'd hear from him again but true to his word he called me the next day and said that he had it all worked out, all agreed and all in place ready to go. Tom fired over the paperwork, I paid the small holding deposit and a few weeks later the vans been delivered and completely exceeded my expectations.
I'm a great believer that 'People buy People', yes Swiss Vans are truly excellent and I'd go as far as to say that in my experience, they're better than the rest but like all other companies they're only as good as the people they have working for them. Tom - I can't thank you enough, you're a credit to Swiss Vans, and Swiss Vans - you're outstanding.
