The Ford Transit Courier has become an increasingly popular choice for camper conversions, offering a unique blend of practicality and versatility. This compact van provides an excellent foundation for those looking to create a cozy home on wheels without the bulk of larger vehicles.
Compact Size and Maneuverability
One of the most significant advantages of the Ford Transit Courier is its compact size. With an exterior length of only 15 feet (4.5 meters), this van is exceptionally easy to drive and maneuver. Its small footprint makes it ideal for urban explorers who need to navigate tight streets and parking spaces. Despite its compact dimensions, the Transit Courier doesn’t compromise on cargo space, offering ample room for conversion potential. The van’s size also makes it an excellent option for solo travelers, couples, or close friends. While it may not be suitable for larger groups, its compact nature is perfect for those who prioritize agility and ease of use. The Transit Courier’s maneuverability allows adventurers to access remote locations and campgrounds that might be challenging for larger vehicles.
Fuel Efficiency
Fuel efficiency is a crucial factor for many camper van enthusiasts, and the Ford Transit Courier doesn’t disappoint in this area. While specific fuel consumption data for the Courier model wasn’t provided, its compact size generally translates to better fuel economy compared to larger vans. This efficiency makes it an economical choice for long-distance travel and extended road trips. The Transit Courier’s fuel efficiency contributes to lower running costs, allowing travelers to allocate more of their budget to experiences rather than fuel expenses. This aspect is particularly appealing for those who plan to spend extended periods on the road or use their camper van frequently for weekend getaways.Affordability
The Ford Transit Courier stands out as an affordable option in the world of camper conversions. While exact prices can vary depending on the vehicle’s age, mileage, and condition, the Transit Courier generally offers a more budget-friendly starting point compared to larger vans. For example, a used Ford Transit Connect (a similar model) from 2012 with around 107,000 miles on the odometer was purchased for approximately £3,692.46. This price point is on the lower end of the spectrum, with prices typically ranging from £3,930 to £5,500 for similar age and mileage. The affordability of the base vehicle allows enthusiasts to allocate more of their budget towards the actual conversion process. When considering the total cost of a camper conversion project, it’s essential to factor in additional expenses beyond the vehicle purchase. These may include:- Materials for the conversion
- Mechanical work and maintenance
- Tools required for the build
- Any professional labor costs if not doing a DIY conversion
Essential Considerations Before Starting Your Conversion
Before embarking on a Ford Transit Courier camper conversion, there are several crucial factors to consider. These considerations will help ensure a successful and compliant conversion process.Budget Planning
One of the first steps in planning a camper conversion is to establish a realistic budget. The total cost of a conversion can vary significantly depending on the extent of modifications and the quality of materials used. Based on a sample budget for a similar van conversion, the total cost breakdown was as follows:- Materials: £338.27
- Mechanical work: £540.91
- Tools: £434.85
- Van purchase: £6,186.00
- Vehicle purchase
- Essential tools and equipment
- Building materials
- Mechanical work and maintenance
- Interior fixtures and appliances

Legal Requirements
Converting a van to a camper involves more than just physical modifications. There are legal considerations to keep in mind, particularly regarding vehicle registration and classification. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has specific requirements for registering a vehicle as a motor caravan. These include:- External features: The vehicle must have at least two windows on one side of the main body, a separate door for living accommodation access, motor caravan-style graphics on both sides, an awning bar, and a high-top roof.
- Internal features: The interior must include seats and a table, sleeping accommodation, cooking facilities, and storage facilities.
DIY vs Professional Conversion
Deciding between a DIY conversion and hiring a professional company is a crucial consideration. Each option has its pros and cons. DIY Conversion Pros:- Often cheaper than professional conversions
- Allows for building in stages as time and budget permit
- Provides personal satisfaction and pride in the work
- Time-consuming, especially for those with little experience
- Potential for mistakes in critical areas like electrical work
- May result in lower resale value
- Ensures high-quality workmanship
- Often comes with warranty coverage
- Saves time and allows focus on other aspects of life
- Generally more expensive upfront
- Less flexibility for changes during the build process
Step-by-Step Guide to Converting Your Ford Transit Courier
Converting a Ford Transit Courier into a camper requires careful planning and execution. This guide outlines the essential steps to transform the vehicle into a cozy home on wheels.Insulation and Flooring
Proper insulation is crucial for maintaining a comfortable temperature inside the van. To begin, lay strips of Reflectix on the floor, especially in vans with troughs and ridges like the Ford Transit. This step helps utilize air pockets and improves overall insulation. Next, install wooden furring beams around the perimeter of the floor and run them horizontally and vertically. These beams provide a foundation for the flooring and furniture, contributing to the van’s structural integrity. For the insulation itself, polyiso board is an excellent choice due to its high R-rating and fire resistance. While XPS is often used for flooring due to its crush resistance, polyiso has proven durable in long-term use. Cut the insulation boards to size and install them between the furring beams. Finally, install a plywood subfloor over the insulation. Cut the plywood to shape using a chalk line and circular saw, then screw it into the wooden furring. This creates a solid base for the living space. For the walls and ceiling, the process is similar. Start by building a wooden support frame along the van’s sides and roof. Use 2×1 timber for the furring, screwing it into place at lower, middle, and upper levels to account for the van’s curvature. Install polyiso foam board panels on the walls and ceiling, cutting them to size with a handsaw. Secure the panels using insulation stick pins or double-sided tape. For any gaps where foam board doesn’t fit, use batt insulation like 3M Thinsulate or Hempitecture HempWool. These materials are excellent for filling awkward spaces and preventing air loops.Electrical System Installation
The electrical system is a critical component of any camper conversion. Begin by planning the system layout using a diagram tool like Microsoft Visio. This helps visualize the placement of components and wire runs. For the power source, consider using two 12-volt Battle Born GC3 batteries wired together to create a 24-volt battery bank. This setup provides 6.8 kilowatt-hours of power storage, equivalent to 270 amp-hours at 24 volts or 540 amp-hours at 12 volts. Install a Victron Lynx Shunt to measure the amperage leaving or entering the battery bank, acting as a fuel gage for the system. Pair this with a Lynx Distributor, which provides organized fused wire runs with minimal electrical connections. For solar charging, install Victron SmartSolar MPPT charge controllers. These controllers manage the power input from solar panels and communicate with the system’s central control unit. To convert power for various devices, include a Victron Orion 24-volt to 12-volt converter. This allows the use of both 24-volt and 12-volt appliances in the van. When running wires, use appropriate gage sizes based on the amperage requirements of each circuit. Group circuits logically, separating them into passenger-side and driver-side to minimize wire runs across the van.Furniture and Storage Solutions
With the foundation and electrical system in place, it’s time to focus on furniture and storage. The Transit Courier’s compact size requires creative solutions to maximize space. Consider installing a pull-out bed system that can double as seating during the day. This versatile approach saves space and allows for multiple uses of the same area. For storage, look into ply-racking solutions designed specifically for vans. These multi-compartment systems can be customized to fit perfectly along the van’s sides or bulkhead. Options include toolbox racks, Makpac, Packout, and Festool shelving systems. When designing the kitchen area, opt for compact, efficient solutions. A kitchen pod that includes basic cooking facilities and storage can be a great space-saving option. Ensure that any built-in furniture or storage systems are securely fastened to the van’s structure to prevent movement during travel. Remember to keep the design modular where possible. This allows for easy removal or reconfiguration of components as needs change over time.Bed Options for Your Ford Transit Courier Camper
When it comes to converting a Ford Transit Courier into a camper, one of the most crucial elements is the bed. The right bed configuration can make or break the comfort and functionality of the camper. There are several options available, each with its own advantages and considerations.Fixed Bed Designs
Fixed beds are a popular choice for many camper enthusiasts. They offer the convenience of a permanent sleeping area without the need for daily setup. In the Ford Transit Courier, a fixed bed can be installed in the rear of the vehicle, typically running sideways to maximize space. One innovative approach is to use a 2/3 fixed and 1/3 removable configuration. This design allows for a comfortable sleeping area while maintaining some flexibility in the layout. The smaller, removable section can double as the back of a sofa during the day, providing additional seating options. When designing a fixed bed, it’s important to consider the height of the bed platform. This affects not only the sleeping comfort but also the storage space underneath. Many camper owners appreciate the ability to sit up in bed, so the maximum height should be calculated with this in mind.Foldable Bed Solutions
For those who prioritize versatility, foldable bed solutions offer an excellent compromise between sleeping comfort and daytime living space. These designs allow the bed to be stowed away when not in use, freeing up valuable floor space. One popular option is the Murphy bed design. This allows the bed to be folded up against the wall during the day, creating an open and airy living space. At night, it can be easily pulled down to transform the area into a cozy bedroom. Another innovative solution is a motorized bed lift system. With this setup, the bed can be raised to the ceiling at the push of a button, creating additional living space below. This system offers the flexibility to stop at any point, allowing for a bunk bed configuration if desired.Mattress Selection
Choosing the right mattress is crucial for ensuring a good night’s sleep in your camper. For the Ford Transit Courier, a mattress no thicker than 6 inches is often recommended to maintain headroom. Many camper owners opt for foam mattresses due to their versatility and comfort. These can be easily cut to size using a bread knife or electric carving knife, allowing for a perfect fit in the limited space of the Courier. When selecting a mattress, consider factors such as firmness, breathability, and temperature regulation. Some campers prefer latex mattresses for their cooling properties and natural materials, while others opt for high-density foam for its support and durability. Custom-made mattresses are also an option, with some local manufacturers offering bespoke solutions tailored to the exact dimensions of your camper. These can be designed with splits or folds to facilitate storage access or to fit around wheel wells and other obstacles. Ultimately, the choice of bed and mattress for your Ford Transit Courier camper will depend on your personal preferences, space constraints, and intended use of the vehicle. By carefully considering these options, you can create a comfortable and functional sleeping area that enhances your camping experience.Kitchen and Living Space Ideas
Compact Kitchen Setups
In the limited space of a Ford Transit Courier camper, efficient kitchen design is crucial. Many camper enthusiasts opt for high-quality, one-piece full side units that come in various styles and colors. These kitchen units are designed specifically for vans like the Ford Transit Custom and can be customized to fit individual requirements. A popular solution for compact kitchens is the use of a kitchen pod. This all-in-one unit typically includes basic cooking facilities and storage, maximizing functionality in a small space. For those who love cooking, having sufficient counter space is essential. A clever way to increase counter space is by installing a butcher’s block sink cover. This simple addition creates a smooth, continuous surface for meal preparation when the sink is not in use. To keep the kitchen organized, innovative storage solutions are key. Mason jars can be used for dry storage, with their lids screwed onto the bottom of kitchen cabinets. This not only saves space but also adds a decorative touch to the camper’s interior. For utensils, a magnetic knife rack provides an efficient and visually appealing storage option, keeping knives accessible without taking up drawer space.Multi-functional Furniture
The key to maximizing living space in a Ford Transit Courier camper lies in multi-functional furniture. One popular option is the Lagun Swivel Table, which can be neatly tucked away when not in use and pulled out to serve as a desk, dining table, or game surface. This versatility is particularly valuable in small campervan conversions. Another space-saving solution is a slide-out table installed under a fixed platform bed. This design allows for both a permanent sleeping area and a workspace without compromising on either. The table can be easily slid away when not needed, maintaining an open feel in the camper. For seating and sleeping arrangements, foldable and removable furniture proves invaluable. These pieces can be easily stowed away or reconfigured to suit different needs, whether it’s creating a workspace during the day or setting up a comfortable sleeping area at night.Space-saving Storage Solutions
Maximizing storage in a Ford Transit Courier camper requires creative thinking. One innovative approach is to utilize the space above the cab. By extending the shelf above the seats and lowering it slightly, significant storage space can be gained. This area is ideal for storing soft goods like sleeping bags, backpacks, and jackets. For additional storage, the use of removable and foldable furniture allows for customization based on specific needs. This flexibility enables campers to carry essential gear without sacrificing living space. When designing storage solutions, it’s important to consider the multifunctionality of the van, allowing for easy transitions between work, travel, and camping modes. Vertical space can be utilized effectively with the installation of shelves or cabinets along the van’s sides. Custom-made solutions, like those offered by some manufacturers, can be tailored to fit the exact dimensions of the Ford Transit Courier, ensuring every inch of space is used efficiently. By implementing these kitchen and living space ideas, Ford Transit Courier owners can create a comfortable and functional camper that meets their needs for both daily use and adventure travel. The key lies in choosing versatile, space-saving solutions that allow for easy customization and maximize the limited space available in this compact van. Conclusion

I don't normally leave reviews but I can't recommend these guys enough, seriously - anyone that's looking to buy a van or other commercial vehicle, give these guy's a call, ask for Tom because you won't be disappointed...!!!
I needed a commercial vehicle for private use as I'm not self employed and therefore paying the VAT upfront is quite a chunk of money to loose so needed it to be wrapped up in the monthly repayment. I'd already tried several other companies before Swiss Vans and non of them were interested. I'd pretty much given up and was looking at 2nd Hand vans until I came across Swiss Vans advert on Facebook. I sent a message (with very low expectation) and the next day I was contacted by Tom Jones (yes, a Welshman called Tom Jones who sells vans...!!!). Tom is the first person that actually took the time to listen to what I needed and how I needed it work. He went away and came back a couple of hours later and explained that initially this wasn't going to be easy to achieve but to leave it with him and that he'd call me the next day. To be honest, I didn't think I'd hear from him again but true to his word he called me the next day and said that he had it all worked out, all agreed and all in place ready to go. Tom fired over the paperwork, I paid the small holding deposit and a few weeks later the vans been delivered and completely exceeded my expectations.
I'm a great believer that 'People buy People', yes Swiss Vans are truly excellent and I'd go as far as to say that in my experience, they're better than the rest but like all other companies they're only as good as the people they have working for them. Tom - I can't thank you enough, you're a credit to Swiss Vans, and Swiss Vans - you're outstanding.
