With its compact size and impressive performance, the Defender 90 Commercial has caught the attention of entrepreneurs and fleet managers alike, prompting a surge in interest for defender 90 commercial lease options.
What is the Land Rover Defender 90 Commercial?
The Land Rover Defender 90 Commercial, also known as the Defender 90 Hard Top, is a versatile and rugged commercial 4×4 vehicle designed for businesses that require a blend of off-road capability and cargo space. This three-door model is the smaller sibling of the five-door Defender 110 Hard Top, offering a compact yet powerful solution for various commercial needs.Key Features
The Defender 90 Commercial boasts several features that set it apart from traditional vans and other commercial vehicles. It comes with a high driving position and large wing mirrors, providing excellent visibility for the driver. The vehicle’s design incorporates a side-hinged rear tailgate for easy access to the cargo area. One of the most notable aspects of the Defender 90 Commercial is its exceptional off-road performance. It offers impressive clearance and articulation, making it suitable for navigating challenging terrains. The vehicle’s traction is remarkable, allowing it to handle slippery surfaces with ease. Additionally, it has a substantial wading depth, enhancing its capabilities in various environmental conditions. The Defender 90 Commercial has a smooth and refined driving experience, contrary to what one might expect from a rugged off-roader. It has a soft and gentle suspension that absorbs hard shocks effectively, providing a comfortable ride even on corrugated surfaces. The vehicle also demonstrates excellent control of pitch and roll, further enhancing its on-road performance.Cargo Capacity
The Defender 90 Commercial is designed with practicality in mind. It features a flat, full-width load area in place of rear seats, separated from the cabin by a tough, full-height bulkhead. This partition enhances security and safety while maintaining the refined driving experience of the passenger model. The cargo area comes equipped with:- Six integrated lashing points
- Heavy-duty rubber mats
- Enhanced interior lighting (five times brighter than the standard passenger Defender)
- 58 liters of lockable underfloor storage at the rear

Engine Options
The Defender 90 Commercial offers a range of advanced Ingenium engines, all paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a twin-speed transfer box as standard. The engine options include:- D200: An inline six-cylinder engine with mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) technology, producing 197bhp.
- P300: A four-cylinder engine delivering 296bhp, known for its reasonable refinement.
- P400: A six-cylinder engine generating 395bhp, offering more power for demanding tasks.
Benefits of Leasing a Defender 90 Commercial
Leasing a Defender 90 Commercial offers numerous advantages for businesses seeking a versatile and capable vehicle. This option has become increasingly popular due to its financial benefits and flexibility. Here are some key advantages of opting for a defender 90 commercial lease:Lower Upfront Costs
One of the primary benefits of leasing a Defender 90 Commercial is the reduced initial investment. Unlike purchasing, which often requires a substantial down payment, leasing typically involves lower upfront costs. This allows businesses to conserve their capital for other essential operations or investments. With various lease options available, companies can choose an initial rental amount that suits their budget, ranging from one to twelve monthly rentals or even a lump sum payment. The higher the initial amount, the lower the subsequent monthly rentals will be, providing flexibility in managing cash flow.Fixed Monthly Payments
Leasing a Defender 90 Commercial provides businesses with predictable expenses through fixed monthly payments. This predictability aids in budgeting and financial planning, as companies know exactly how much they need to allocate for their vehicle expenses each month. The lease terms typically range from 24 to 60 months, allowing businesses to select a duration that aligns with their needs. For example, business contract hire prices for various Defender 90 Commercial models over different terms are:- 24 months: £472.44 to £594.37 per month (excluding VAT)
- 36 months: £521.76 to £614.44 per month (excluding VAT)
- 48 months: £549.95 to £641.46 per month (excluding VAT)
Tax Advantages for Businesses
Leasing a Defender 90 Commercial can offer significant tax benefits for businesses. VAT-registered companies can reclaim a portion of the VAT paid on rental payments, which can result in substantial savings over the lease term. Additionally, businesses can reclaim all of the VAT paid on optional service maintenance and repair packages, further reducing their overall costs. The Defender 90 Commercial, classified as a commercial vehicle, also qualifies for favorable corporation tax reduction schemes. This classification allows businesses to treat the vehicle as “plant,” potentially leading to additional tax benefits. However, it’s important to note that if the vehicle is used for any personal purposes, there may be a small benefit-in-kind charge of tax on £3,600. For businesses looking to maximize tax efficiency, it’s worth noting that leasing the vehicle allows for 50% VAT recovery if it’s not available for personal use. This can be a significant advantage compared to purchasing the vehicle outright. By choosing to lease a Defender 90 Commercial, businesses can enjoy the benefits of driving a high-quality, versatile vehicle while taking advantage of these financial and tax benefits. The combination of lower upfront costs, predictable monthly payments, and potential tax advantages makes leasing an attractive option for companies looking to optimize their vehicle fleet management.Understanding Business Contract Hire (BCH)
Business Contract Hire (BCH), also known as Business Leasing, is a popular financing option for companies looking to acquire vehicles like the Defender 90 Commercial. This method offers a cost-effective way to fund a single company car or an entire fleet of business vehicles. How BCH Works
BCH involves fixed monthly rental payments over an agreed term, typically ranging from 24 to 60 months. The process begins with selecting a vehicle that suits the business’s needs, such as the Defender 90 Commercial. The company then decides on the contract duration and estimates the annual mileage. For example, a typical BCH offer for a Defender 90 D250 Hard Top X-Dynamic SE might include:- Term: 48 months
- Annual mileage: 10,000 miles
- Monthly rental: £709 + VAT
- Initial rental: £4,254 + VAT
- Excess mileage charge: 18.50p per mile
Initial Payment Options
BCH agreements offer flexibility in terms of initial payments:- Standard initial rental: This is typically equivalent to 1-12 monthly rentals.
- Lump sum payment: Businesses can opt for a larger upfront payment.
- Customized initial rental: The amount can be adjusted to suit the company’s financial situation.
End of Agreement Terms
At the conclusion of the BCH agreement, the business has a straightforward option:- Return the vehicle: The company simply hands back the keys and walks away, provided they’ve adhered to the contract terms.
- Mileage: If the vehicle has exceeded the agreed mileage limit, excess mileage charges will apply. It’s crucial to accurately estimate the required mileage at the start of the contract.
- Vehicle condition: The vehicle must be returned in good condition, in line with the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) Fair Wear & Tear guidelines.
- VAT advantages: VAT-registered companies can reclaim a portion of the VAT paid on rental payments and all VAT paid on optional service and maintenance packages.
- Predictable costs: Fixed monthly payments include Vehicle Excise Duty, aiding in budget planning.
- Flexibility: Contracts can be adjusted if business needs change.
Comparing Lease Options for the Defender 90
When considering a Defender 90 Commercial lease, businesses have several options to choose from. Each lease type offers unique advantages, and understanding these differences can help companies make the best decision for their needs.Business Contract Hire vs Personal Contract Hire
Business Contract Hire (BCH) and Personal Contract Hire (PCH) are two popular leasing options for the Defender 90. BCH is specifically designed for businesses, while PCH caters to individual consumers. BCH offers several benefits for companies:- VAT Advantages: VAT-registered businesses can reclaim a portion of the VAT paid on rental payments and all VAT paid on optional service and maintenance packages.
- Flexible Terms: Companies can adjust their contract term and mileage if their needs change.
- Additional Options: Road Fund License is included, with optional maintenance, servicing, tire replacement, and repair packages available.
- Fixed Monthly Rentals: Businesses pay regular monthly rentals over an agreed term of 2-5 years, with VAT and Vehicle Excise Duty charged at the prevailing rate.
- Term: 48 months
- Annual mileage: 10,000 miles
- Monthly rental: £709 + VAT
- Initial rental: £4,254 + VAT
- Excess mileage charge: 18.50p per mile
Lease vs Buy Analysis
When deciding whether to lease or buy a Defender 90, several factors come into play:- Cost Differences:
- Leasing often involves lower monthly payments and down payments compared to financing.
- There are typically fewer service or repair costs with leasing.
- Financing allows for the eventual elimination of monthly payments once the vehicle is paid off.
- Ownership Possibilities:
- Leased vehicles are owned by the dealership, limiting customization options.
- Financed vehicles offer the freedom to add accessories or make modifications.
- Freedom & Flexibility:
- Leasing provides a simple return and upgrade process at the end of the term.
- Financing allows for selling or trading in the vehicle at any time, provided the loan is not upside down.
- Restrictions & Limitations:
- Leased cars have strict mileage restrictions, with penalty fees for exceeding limits.
- Financed vehicles have no mileage limitations.
Customizing Your Defender 90 Commercial Lease
When leasing a Defender 90 Commercial, businesses have the opportunity to tailor their agreement to suit their specific needs. This customization allows for greater flexibility and can help optimize the lease to align with the company’s operational requirements and financial goals.Mileage Allowances
One of the key aspects of customizing a Defender 90 Commercial lease is selecting the appropriate mileage allowance. This decision has a significant impact on the monthly rental payments and potential excess mileage charges. Businesses need to carefully estimate their annual mileage to avoid additional costs at the end of the lease term. It’s important to note that while higher mileage allowances result in increased monthly payments, they can prevent costly excess mileage fees.Contract Length Options
The Land Rover Defender 90 Commercial lease offers a range of contract length options, typically spanning from 18 to 60 months. This flexibility allows businesses to choose a term that aligns with their long-term plans and budget constraints. Shorter leases provide the advantage of more frequent vehicle upgrades, while longer terms often result in lower monthly payments. Companies should consider factors such as their growth projections and anticipated vehicle needs when selecting the contract length.Additional Services and Maintenance Packages
To enhance the leasing experience and provide peace of mind, Land Rover offers various optional services and maintenance packages for the Defender 90 Commercial. These packages can be incorporated into the lease agreement, potentially simplifying budgeting and vehicle management. One such option is the Complete Care package, which includes routine servicing, maintenance, and repairs. This package has specific eligibility criteria:- Available to drivers aged 21-70
- No more than 2 “at fault” claims in the last 2 years
- No more than 6 points on the driving license
- No driving bans in the last 5 years
- Full UK/EU license held for at least 1 year
- First incident: £250
- Second incident: £350
- Third and subsequent incidents: £750

I don't normally leave reviews but I can't recommend these guys enough, seriously - anyone that's looking to buy a van or other commercial vehicle, give these guy's a call, ask for Tom because you won't be disappointed...!!!
I needed a commercial vehicle for private use as I'm not self employed and therefore paying the VAT upfront is quite a chunk of money to loose so needed it to be wrapped up in the monthly repayment. I'd already tried several other companies before Swiss Vans and non of them were interested. I'd pretty much given up and was looking at 2nd Hand vans until I came across Swiss Vans advert on Facebook. I sent a message (with very low expectation) and the next day I was contacted by Tom Jones (yes, a Welshman called Tom Jones who sells vans...!!!). Tom is the first person that actually took the time to listen to what I needed and how I needed it work. He went away and came back a couple of hours later and explained that initially this wasn't going to be easy to achieve but to leave it with him and that he'd call me the next day. To be honest, I didn't think I'd hear from him again but true to his word he called me the next day and said that he had it all worked out, all agreed and all in place ready to go. Tom fired over the paperwork, I paid the small holding deposit and a few weeks later the vans been delivered and completely exceeded my expectations.
I'm a great believer that 'People buy People', yes Swiss Vans are truly excellent and I'd go as far as to say that in my experience, they're better than the rest but like all other companies they're only as good as the people they have working for them. Tom - I can't thank you enough, you're a credit to Swiss Vans, and Swiss Vans - you're outstanding.
