The VW ID Buzz Camper: Revolutionizing Eco-Friendly Road Tripse The Volkswagen ID Buzz Camper is causing a revolution in the world of eco-friendly road trips. This innovative vehicle combines the nostalgia of the classic VW Type 2 with cutting-edge electric technology, offering a unique blend of style, sustainability, and adventure. The ID Buzz Camper is not just a mode of transportation; it’s a mobile home that allows travelers to explore the great outdoors while minimizing their environmental impact.
This article delves into the key features that make the ID Buzz Camper stand out. We’ll explore its evolution from the iconic Type 2, examine its spacious interior and camping capabilities, and discuss its eco-friendly performance. Additionally, we’ll look at the smart technology integrated into the vehicle, enhancing the overall travel experience. By the end, readers will have a comprehensive understanding of how the VW ID Buzz Camper is shaping the future of sustainable travel and outdoor adventures.
The Evolution of an Icon: From Type 2 to ID Buzz
The Volkswagen ID Buzz represents a remarkable evolution from its iconic predecessor, the Type 2, blending nostalgia with cutting-edge technology. This transformation showcases Volkswagen’s commitment to innovation while honoring its rich heritage.
Design Inspiration
The ID Buzz pays homage to the legendary VW bus that became a symbol of freedom and adventure in the 1950s and beyond. Its design seamlessly merges the past with the present, featuring a flat front with minimal overhang and a prominent V-shaped face adorned with an oversized VW logo. These elements are direct nods to the original T1, which was an icon of the 1950s.
Jozef Kabaň, Volkswagen’s head of design, explains, “With the ID Buzz, we’re transferring its DNA into the age of electromobility. It’s conveying the icon’s genes and design elements into the digital age.” The proportions of the ID Buzz are particularly noteworthy, as Kabaň points out, “In the T1 you are practically sitting on top of the front axle – there’s no front overhang. While providing everything of relevance to safety and technology, the ID Buzz has wonderfully short overhangs.”
To further emphasize the connection to its predecessor, the ID Buzz offers optional two-tone paintwork, enhancing its retro appeal while maintaining a modern esthetic.
Modern Electric Drivetrain
While the exterior may evoke memories of the past, the ID Buzz’s powertrain is firmly rooted in the future. The European version comes equipped with a 77kWh battery and a rear-mounted 150kW electric motor, providing ample power for modern driving needs. This setup allows for quick charging capabilities, with the battery level rising from 5% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes when connected to a direct-current quick-charging station.
For the North American market, Volkswagen has introduced a long wheelbase variant with even more impressive specifications. It features a powerful 210 kW electric motor, pushing the vehicle to a maximum speed of 160 km/h. This version also boasts a larger 85 kWh battery, ensuring extended range for longer journeys. Looking ahead, an all-wheel drive version with 250 kW is planned for 2024, promising a 0 to 100 km/h sprint in just 6.4 seconds.
Sustainable Materials
In line with Volkswagen’s commitment to sustainability, the ID Buzz incorporates a range of eco-friendly materials in its interior. The company has made a conscious decision to create an animal-leather-free interior, replacing traditional materials with sustainable alternatives that offer similar properties and feel.
One notable example is the use of Seaqual® yarn for seat covers. This innovative material is composed of 10% collected marine debris and 90% recycled PES yarn, resulting in a 32% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional cover materials. Another sustainable option is ArtVelours Eco®, which boasts a recycling share of 71%.
Volkswagen’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond seating materials. The headliner and floor covering in the ID Buzz are made entirely from recycled polyester. Recycled plastics are also used in the insulating layer of the carpet, underbody cladding, and wheel housing liners.
Furthermore, Volkswagen has eliminated the use of chrome for trim parts on the doors, instrument panel, and steering wheel clip, as chrome production is harmful to the environment. Instead, these elements feature a liquid paint with a chrome-like appearance, utilizing a bio-based binder.
These sustainable choices align with Volkswagen’s broader environmental goals. By 2030, the company aims to reduce carbon emissions in Europe per vehicle by 40%, with the ultimate goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050 at the latest.
Spacious and Versatile Interior
The VW ID Buzz Camper offers a spacious and versatile interior that sets it apart from other vehicles in its class. Its design maximizes space utilization, providing comfort and functionality for passengers and cargo alike.
Flexible Seating Configurations
The ID Buzz Camper comes in various seating configurations to suit different needs. The standard five-seat model features a sliding bench in the rear, allowing users to adjust between increased legroom and expanded boot space. These seats also recline, enhancing passenger comfort during long journeys.
For those requiring more seating capacity, a long-wheelbase version is available with either six or seven seats. The seven-seat configuration follows a 2/3/2 layout, while the six-seat option offers a 2/2/2 arrangement. This flexibility makes the ID Buzz Camper suitable for larger families or groups.
A notable feature of the seven-seat model is the removable third row. When removed, it creates an impressive 1,340-liter cargo space, an increase of 219 liters over the short-wheelbase version. With all seats in use, the cargo area still offers a respectable 306 liters of storage.
The front seats deserve special mention. In some models, passengers can easily move between the front and back rows, thanks to the open floor design. This feature is particularly useful when parked in tight spaces where opening the wide front doors might be challenging.
Ample Storage Solutions
The ID Buzz Camper excels in providing storage options throughout the vehicle. The cabin has numerous stowage pockets, ensuring that passengers have easy access to their belongings. The driver’s area includes a deep pocket in the door, a smaller pocket higher up, a compartment next to the steering wheel, and a charging pad on the opposite side.
Higher-spec models come with an additional central bin that can be removed. This bin includes practical tools like an integrated ice scraper and bottle opener, showcasing Volkswagen’s attention to detail and user convenience.
Rear passengers benefit from storage pockets above and below fold-out tables attached to the back of the front seats. Charging ports in the rear doors allow passengers to keep their devices powered during trips.
The boot space is particularly impressive, offering 1,121 liters in the standard configuration. An optional board can create two levels in the boot, which can be removed to maximize load space when needed. This versatility in cargo management is unmatched in its class, making the ID Buzz Camper exceptionally practical for various uses.
Tech-Friendly Features
The ID Buzz Camper incorporates several tech-friendly features to enhance the travel experience. It comes standard with wireless device charging, ensuring that passengers can keep their devices powered without the hassle of cables. The vehicle also supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing seamless integration of smartphones with the vehicle’s infotainment system.
For the first time in the ID Buzz line, Volkswagen has included a head-up display. This feature projects essential information such as speed, speed limits, and navigation directions directly onto the windshield, allowing drivers to access crucial data without taking their eyes off the road.
The vehicle is equipped with over 30 assistance systems, marking a significant step towards semi-automated driving. These systems enhance safety and convenience, making long journeys more comfortable and secure.
The ID Buzz Camper also features Car2X communication, enabling it to receive real-time traffic-related information. This technology helps drivers make informed decisions about their route and potentially avoid traffic congestion or hazards.
In conclusion, the spacious and versatile interior of the VW ID Buzz Camper combines comfort, practicality, and advanced technology. Its flexible seating configurations, ample storage solutions, and tech-friendly features make it an ideal choice for families, adventurers, and anyone seeking a versatile electric vehicle for their journeys.
Eco-Friendly Performance
The VW ID Buzz Camper showcases impressive eco-friendly performance, combining electric power with innovative features to maximize efficiency and range.
Electric Range and Charging
The ID Buzz Camper offers a commendable electric range, making it suitable for both short trips and longer journeys. The standard-length model comes equipped with a 79kWh (usable capacity) battery pack, providing an official range of up to 283 miles, depending on the specific configuration. For those seeking extended range, the long-wheelbase version features an 86kWh battery, increasing the official range to 291 miles.
It’s important to note that, like all electric vehicles, real-world range may fall short of these official figures. Factors such as temperature, driving conditions, and onboard power usage can affect the actual range. During testing in varying temperatures (-3°C to 17°C), the ID Buzz consumed an average of 23.9kWh per 100km, equating to about 2.6 miles per kWh.
When it comes to charging, the ID Buzz Camper supports fast charging capabilities. The standard version can charge at up to 170kW, while the long-wheelbase model supports up to 200kW. This allows for a quick top-up from 5% to 80% battery capacity in approximately 30 minutes when connected to a suitably powerful DC fast charger. For added convenience, the vehicle supports Plug & Charge technology, which simplifies the charging process by automatically authenticating the user at compatible charging stations.
Regenerative Braking
The ID Buzz Camper incorporates an advanced regenerative braking system, which plays a crucial role in extending the vehicle’s range and improving overall efficiency. This system converts the kinetic energy created during braking into electrical energy, which is then fed back into the battery.
The regenerative braking feature in the ID Buzz automatically adjusts its strength based on road layout and traffic conditions. In the default ‘D’ mode, the vehicle coasts when the driver releases the accelerator, making it easier to maintain speed on faster, flowing roads. For more aggressive energy recuperation, drivers can switch to ‘B’ mode, which increases the braking effect and allows for near one-pedal driving in urban environments.
Efficiency Features
Volkswagen has incorporated several efficiency features into the ID Buzz Camper to maximize its eco-friendly performance. The vehicle’s design, based on the MEB platform shared with other Volkswagen electric models, contributes to its efficiency. The battery placement along the floor lowers the center of gravity, improving handling and energy management.
To enhance efficiency in colder climates, newer versions of the ID Buzz include a heat pump, which helps to reduce the impact of heating on the vehicle’s range. Additionally, the vehicle’s battery management system has been upgraded to optimize charging efficiency. It now allows for programming up to 10 charging stops on a route, preconditioning the battery to accept the maximum charge rate faster, potentially saving time in colder weather.
The ID Buzz Camper’s electric drivetrain offers varying power outputs to suit different needs. The standard model features a single rear-mounted motor, recently upgraded to 282bhp, providing a balance of performance and efficiency. For those requiring more power, the GTX variant offers dual motors with a combined output of 335bhp, enabling quicker acceleration and increased towing capacity of up to 1,800kg.
In terms of environmental impact, Volkswagen aims to deliver the ID Buzz net-carbon-neutral, aligning with the company’s broader sustainability goals. This commitment extends to the vehicle’s production process and the sourcing of materials, further enhancing its eco-friendly credentials.
Camping Capabilities
The VW ID Buzz Camper offers a range of features that make it an ideal choice for eco-friendly camping adventures. Its innovative design and versatile interior provide campers with comfort and convenience, whether they opt for built-in amenities or aftermarket conversions.
Built-in Amenities
The ID Buzz Camper comes with several built-in features that enhance its camping capabilities. The spacious interior allows for flexible seating configurations, accommodating up to five traveling passengers. The rear seats can be folded down to create a comfortable sleeping area for two adults, with a mattress measuring 125 x 195cm.
For food preparation and storage, the camper includes a compact yet efficient kitchen setup. A 20-liter top-loading fridge keeps perishables fresh, while a Sterling Power single induction hob provides a safe and efficient cooking solution. The handcrafted furniture, available in lightweight Vohringer material, offers ample storage space and includes a cupboard, drawer, and table for both elegance and practicality.
The camper also features a full electrics package with a 240/12v charging system, LED lighting, and both 240v and 12v USB sockets. Privacy tinted glass with two openers ensures comfort and security during overnight stays.
Aftermarket Conversion Options
For those seeking additional customization, aftermarket conversion options are available to transform the ID Buzz into a fully-fledged campervan. Companies like Ququq offer innovative solutions such as the BusBox-4 camping box, which can convert the ID Buzz into a functional camper in less than 10 minutes.
The Ququq BusBox-4 includes:
A fold-out bed system with a 10cm-thick mattress
A compact kitchen with a two-burner gas stove
A 15-liter 12V fridge (upgradable to 20 liters)
Two 10-liter freshwater tanks
Stainless steel trays for washing up
Two comfortable chairs that store neatly when not in use
These aftermarket conversions provide a cost-effective alternative to factory-built camper versions, allowing owners to easily switch between daily use and camping mode.
Off-Grid Power Solutions
The ID Buzz Camper’s electric drivetrain presents unique opportunities and challenges for off-grid camping. While the vehicle itself has an impressive range of up to 260 miles, powering additional camping equipment requires careful consideration.
To address this, many campers opt for supplementary power solutions:
Solar Panels: The ID Buzz can be equipped with solar panels, with some conversions offering up to 305 watts of solar power. This renewable energy source helps maintain battery charge during extended stays.
Portable Power Stations: Devices like the BaseCharge 1500 from Biolite can provide additional power without overloading the vehicle’s electrical system. These portable batteries can be charged from the vehicle or solar panels and offer multiple outlets for powering various devices.
Efficient Appliances: The use of energy-efficient appliances, such as LED lighting and induction cooktops, helps conserve power and extend off-grid capabilities.
Smart Power Management: Some conversions include advanced power management systems that prioritize essential functions and optimize energy usage.
While the ID Buzz currently lacks a dedicated “Camp Mode” for extended power usage while stationary, these off-grid solutions allow campers to enjoy extended stays without compromising on comfort or functionality.
The combination of built-in amenities, aftermarket conversion options, and off-grid power solutions makes the VW ID Buzz Camper a versatile and eco-friendly choice for modern camping enthusiasts. Its ability to balance everyday practicality with camping functionality positions it as an attractive option for those seeking sustainable adventure travel.

Climate Control and Driving Modes: Shortcut buttons below the screen offer quick access to climate control, driving modes, and driver assistance systems.
Driver Assistance Features
The ID Buzz Camper has over 30 assistance systems, marking a significant step towards semi-automated driving. Key features include:
Travel Assist: This optional system keeps the vehicle in lane, maintains distance from the vehicle in front, and ensures adherence to set speed limits. It adapts to the driver’s style and can keep the vehicle to the left or right of the lane instead of the center.
Predictive Cruise Control: Travel Assist includes this feature, which adapts vehicle speed to valid speed limits and road conditions, such as bends and roundabouts.
Lane Change Assist: At speeds above 90 km/h on motorways, Travel Assist can support lane changes when activated by the driver using the turn signal.

I was worried first as I shoped about and some of the quotes I received was astronomical with other companies, but I feel as a customer a customer of swiss vans i looked after in everything that I was promised so I would definitely recommend these guys and I will no doubt use their services again in the future..... I don't normally leave reviews but I can't recommend these guys enough, seriously - anyone that's looking to buy a van or other commercial vehicle, give these guy's a call, ask for Tom because you won't be disappointed...!!!
I needed a commercial vehicle for private use as I'm not self employed and therefore paying the VAT upfront is quite a chunk of money to loose so needed it to be wrapped up in the monthly repayment. I'd already tried several other companies before Swiss Vans and non of them were interested. I'd pretty much given up and was looking at 2nd Hand vans until I came across Swiss Vans advert on Facebook. I sent a message (with very low expectation) and the next day I was contacted by Tom Jones (yes, a Welshman called Tom Jones who sells vans...!!!). Tom is the first person that actually took the time to listen to what I needed and how I needed it work. He went away and came back a couple of hours later and explained that initially this wasn't going to be easy to achieve but to leave it with him and that he'd call me the next day. To be honest, I didn't think I'd hear from him again but true to his word he called me the next day and said that he had it all worked out, all agreed and all in place ready to go. Tom fired over the paperwork, I paid the small holding deposit and a few weeks later the vans been delivered and completely exceeded my expectations.
I'm a great believer that 'People buy People', yes Swiss Vans are truly excellent and I'd go as far as to say that in my experience, they're better than the rest but like all other companies they're only as good as the people they have working for them. Tom - I can't thank you enough, you're a credit to Swiss Vans, and Swiss Vans - you're outstanding.
